Overview

Located near the south-eastern tip of Sanibel Island, Lighthouse Beach Park is a large recreational park which has an unnamed white sand beach. This curve-shaped beach is also sometimes known as Lighthouse Beach. Dense vegetation is present near the beach, along with a 19th-century lighthouse named the Sanibel Island Lighthouse. This beach also has a T-shaped pier named Sanibel Island Pier. 

Amenities

Lighthouse Beach Park does not have lifeguards. However, the beach and the area around it have many amenities including restrooms, a shower, boardwalks, nature trails, and a bike rack. Lighthouse Beach Park also offers accessibility to people with disabilities. In addition, complimentary beach wheelchairs are also provided to visitors with disabilities by the City of Sanibel Police Department Dispatch on the basis of availability. If you require a beach wheelchair, you can call the City of Sanibel Police Department Dispatch at 239-472-3111 to book one at least 24 hours before your visit. Leashed dogs are allowed in Lighthouse Beach Park. 

Activities

Lighthouse Beach Park offers many fun activities including sunbathing, beachcombing, fishing, hiking, wildlife watching, surfing, kitesurfing, windsurfing, bodyboarding, boating, jet-skiing, surf-skiing, kayaking, canoeing, and water-skiing. The water near Lighthouse Beach Park is popular among windsurfers and kitesurfers. However, if you are planning to enter the water near Lighthouse Beach Park, we recommend being careful as the water here is known to have dangerous and unpredictable rip currents. If you are a beginner swimmer, we recommend foregoing recreational water activities in Lighthouse Beach Park. The beach in Lighthouse Beach Park is a great place for beachcombing as you can find a large variety of shells here. Depending on the time of the year, you can view many kinds of animals in the water near Lighthouse Beach Park including dolphins and sea turtles. Sea turtles also seasonally use the beach in Lighthouse Beach Park as a nesting spot. If you like birdwatching, you can view many kinds of shorebirds around Lighthouse Beach Park. The pier in Lighthouse Beach Park is a great fishing spot and you can catch many kinds of fish here including snook, sheepshead, and snapper. However, if you are planning to fish in the water near Lighthouse Beach Park, please make sure that you follow the local fishing regulations. Lighthouse Beach Park offers amazing Instagram-worthy views of the Sanibel Island shoreline.


You can explore the beautiful native wetlands present near the beach through boardwalks. In addition, the Sanibel Island Lighthouse is also present near the beach - this lighthouse was initially built in 1884 and is mostly composed of an iron skeleton tower. This lighthouse is also a part of the United States National Register of Historic Places.

Getting to Lighthouse Beach Park is easy - the park is present near 110 Periwinkle Way, where a paid parking lot is also available.

Attractions

There are many attractions near Lighthouse Beach Park. Causeway Islands Park is a recreational park which is composed of two interconnected spoil islands - this park offers many amenities including barbecue areas, picnic areas, paddlecraft launching areas, and restrooms. In addition, the park is also an amazing fishing spot. Sanibel Historical Museum & Village offers a unique insight into the vibrant history of Sanibel Island’s vibrant history. The village also has a collection of nine historic buildings dating back to the late 19th and early 20th centuries which have been moved to the site from their original locations and have been restored to their original conditions. The village also has docents that offer interesting information about local history. If you are looking for another attraction near Lighthouse Beach Park, J.N. "Ding" Darling Wildlife Refuge is spread over 6,400 acres and it has many kinds of habitats including mangrove forests, West Indian hardwood hammock forests, and marine seagrass beds. You can explore this refuge’s vibrant landscape via the hiking and biking trails present here. In addition, this refuge is also a fantastic wildlife watching spot and you can view many kinds of animals here including alligators, crocodiles, fish, bobcat, rabbits, racoons, and otters. In addition, this refuge is also home to more than 245 varieties of birds and you can see many migratory and resident bird species here. If you are planning to visit this refuge, we recommend visiting between November and April as this refuge offers an amazing wildlife watching experience during this time.

If you get hungry, there are many great restaurants near Lighthouse Beach Park. Traders is an upscale restaurant that serves amazing gourmet dishes with local coastal culinary influences. The restaurant also offers live music performances and it also has a gift shop. Blue Giraffe offers fantastic dishes for breakfast, lunch, and dinner including eggs, French toasts, sandwiches, salads, burgers, seafood, Mexican dishes, burgers, pork chops, poultry dishes, and pastas. If you are looking for another good and affordable restaurant near Lighthouse Beach Park, Sanibel Deli & Coffee Factory offers excellent salads, breakfast dishes, wraps, sandwiches, soups, chicken wings, and pizzas. 

Hotels

If you are looking for a hotel near Lighthouse Beach Park, there are many great nearby options. The 4-Star Marriott Sanibel Harbour Resort & Spa offers many amenities including multiple restaurants, a bar, a spa with a pool, and a steam room, three additional outdoor pools, a gym, a tennis court, and a hot tub. A more affordable hotel is the 3-Star Sanibel Inn which offers many amenities including a restaurant and a pool. The hotel also offers many other amenities for a resort fee including access to tennis courts and a golf club and a loaner facility for bikes, kayaks, and beach chairs. If you are looking for another good and affordable hotel near Lighthouse Beach Park, the 2-Star Colony Inn offers many amenities including a pool, barbecue areas with picnic tables, coin-operated laundry, and bike rental facilities.
