Overview

Located in the city of Port Hueneme, Port Hueneme Beach Park – also known as Hueneme Beach Park - is a 50-acre recreational park with a wide beach that has light brown sand. Wetlands are present near the southern end of this beach. A long wooden fishing pier is also present on this beach. The beach in Port Hueneme Beach Park is frequently threatened by erosion. In order to replenish the beach’s sand, the United States Army Corps of Engineers conducts dredging operations here twice a year. Port Hueneme Beach Park has many other amenities including lifeguards, volleyball courts, picnic tables, lifeguards, barbecue spots, restrooms, and walking paths. Dogs are not allowed on this beach.

Activities

Port Hueneme Beach Park offers many fun activities including sunbathing, beachcombing, fishing, wildlife watching, picnicking, volleyball, swimming, surfing, kayaking, canoeing, kitesurfing, windsurfing, bodysurfing, bodyboarding, jet skiing, boating, and surf-skiing. If you are planning to go into the water near Port Hueneme Beach Park, we recommend being careful as the water here is known to have rip currents. Depending on the time of the year, you can see many kinds of animals in the water near this beach including seals, sea lions, and migrating whales. The wooden fishing pier present in Port Hueneme Beach Park offers amazing Instagram-worthy views of the Pacific Ocean and the nearby Channel Islands. In addition, you can catch many kinds of fish here including croaker, halibut, perches, yellowfin, and guitarfish. However, if you are planning to fish in the water near Port Hueneme Beach Park, please make sure that you follow the local fishing regulations. A somber memorial sundial is also present in Point Hueneme Beach Park which is dedicated to the lives lost on board the Alaska Airlines Flight 261, which crashed just offshore in 2000. Port Hueneme Beach Park also hosts the annual Hueneme Beach Festival organized in August. The festival sees interesting exciting musical performances, art exhibitions, and sand sculpture contests being organized on the beach park. In addition, carnival-style rides and games are also available for kids and adults. A walking path that starts from a promenade near Port Hueneme Beach Park leads to the Point Hueneme Lighthouse. The current lighthouse on this spot was constructed in the 1940s and exhibits the Art Moderne architectural style. This lighthouse also has a Fourth Order Fresnel Lens constructed in France. The lighthouse is usually open for tours on the third Saturday of the month between February and October from 10 am to 3 pm.

Getting to Port Hueneme Beach Park is easy - the paid parking lot for the beach park is located near the intersection between Surfside Drive and South Ventura Road, which is easily accessible from the intersection between Pacific Coast Highway and the United States Highway 101 in the nearby city of Oxnard.

Attractions

There are many attractions near Port Hueneme Beach Park. Port Hueneme Historical Society Museum has interesting historical exhibitions about the history of Port Hueneme and Ventura County. This museum is set in a building that was constructed in 1925 and designed by renowned local architect Myron Hunt. This museum also hosts informative lectures which are usually conducted every Saturday. Channel Islands Maritime Museum offers interesting exhibitions focused on maritime art and antique ship models. The museum has maritime artworks dating back to the 17h century. In addition, the museum also has antique ship models from the 18th and 19th centuries. If you are looking for another attraction near Port Hueneme Beach Park, the United States Navy Seabee Museum has interesting exhibits dedicated to the United States Naval Construction Battalions of the United States Navy.
