Overview
Located in the city of Malibu, Malibu Pier is a historic landmark that was built in 1905. This Southern California icon is known for its rough-hewn planks and iconic dual white towers – Beachcomber Café (famous for its B-52 cocktail) and Malibu Pier Club. Malibu Pier has been the setting for many famed movies and television series, most notably The Rockford Files, Gidget, and Beach Blanket Bingo. It is strategically located just five-minutes away from Carbon Beach, La Costa Beach, and Las Flores Beach. Adjacent to Malibu Pier, there is a three-point break on Surfrider Beach offering rides of over 300 yards. There are plans to open a surf museum on the pier displaying vintage surf memorabilia and the history of the surf culture in Malibu, portrayed in artful exhibits.
Amenities
Surfrider Beach has several amenities including a pier, restrooms, showers, and an observation deck where you shop, look for dolphins and even meet movie stars on a lucky day. Please note that the official beach hours are from 8:00 am until 8:00 pm.
Activities
If you are looking for activities, you can enjoy fishing and surfing. Zuma Jay’s at the Malibu Pier is a rental agency that works on the pier renting surfboards, boogie boards, kayaks, and other beach equipment.
Parking
Getting to this beach is very easy – it is located on Pacific Coast Highway 11 miles west of the city of Santa Monica. There is paid parking available in addition to street parking along the highway.
Attractions
If you are looking for nearby attractions, there are many nearby. Spread across six acres, Malibu Bluffs Park is a community park consisting of two baseball diamonds, a soccer field, a playground, a skate park, picnic tables, and a whale watching station. It also hosts many events and sports leagues for children, youths, and adults. Point Dume is a promontory that projects into the Pacific Ocean – it forms the northern end of Santa Monica Bay, and is a perfect spot for hiking, especially for beginners because of its natural climbing wall with moderate single-pitch rock climbing routes. Escondido Falls are the tallest waterfalls in the Santa Monica Mountains – they are 200 feet tall and can be reached by following the popular Escondido Falls Hiking Trail which is four miles long. Also known as the ‘Taj Mahal of Tile’, the Adamson House Museum explores the history of Malibu. As other options, Malibu Beach Supply Company offers branded merchandise, sundries, and souvenirs and Malibu Outfitters features a fishing equipment rental shop as well as sports fishing and whale watching excursions.
Restaurants
If you get hungry, there are two restaurants on Malibu Pier – Malibu Farm is a chic bistro that serves farm-to-table dishes and has a full bar, and Beachcomber Café is a 1940s-styled restaurant that serves American cuisine, margaritas, and other cocktails. If you are looking for an upscale restaurant, the always-crowded Japanese-themed Nobu Malibu is 100 feet away and features Nobu Matsuhisa's signature dishes such as Tiradito, Yellowtail Sashimi with Jalapeno, and Black Cod with Miso. It was also mentioned in “Explore the Best Celebrity Hangouts in Los Angeles” by Fodor’s Travel – but if you are coming here bring your wallet because it’s very expensive. If you are looking for a fast-food option, you can walk a few minutes to Jack in the Box which serves burgers, fries, and chicken sandwiches.
Hotels
If you are looking for a hotel, you can walk two minutes to Nobu Ryokan Malibu, an intimate, 16-room 5-Star beachfront hotel featuring a fitness center with a gym. Malibu Beach Inn is a 4-Star hotel with a bar, spa, and restaurant that is located on Carbon Beach, which has been nicknamed Billionaires’ Beach due to the many ultrawealthy homeowners and incredibly expensive homes there. The 3-Star pet-friendly hotel Malibu Country Inn has a pool and an outdoor fireplace. If you are looking for an affordable option, The M Malibu is a nice 2-Star hotel that offers a pool, and wine tasting sessions.
