Overview

Located in the cosmopolitan city of Barcelona, Somorrostro Beach  is a long, wide, and beige-colored beach that is a part of the neighborhood of Somorrostro.  Also known as Playa del Somorrostro, Somorrostro Beach  was named after the same neighborhood in 1960 and is among the most popular beaches in Barcelona.  Somorrostro Beach is situated adjacent to the very popular neighborhood of La Barceloneta that hosted the 1992 Olympics Games which led to a radical transformation and growth in the tourism of this neighborhood and its beaches.  Somorrostro Beach has been awarded the Blue Flag for its cleanliness.  Somorrostro Beach runs along a promenade that has many restaurants, cafes, and bars – you can also walk, jog, or ride a bike here.

Somorrostro Beach offers many amenities including lifeguards, restrooms, showers, water sport equipment rentals, wooden walkways, two ping-pong tables, a football pitch, a volleyball court, and a playground.

Activities

Somorrostro Beach has mid-sized waves as it is located between two breakwaters making it a great spot for surfing.  There are many other fun activities at Somorrostro Beach  including swimming, fishing, boating, kayaking, kitesurfing, windsurfing, sunbathing, and beach walking.

Somorrostro Beach was once known as Playa de las Canas or “Beach of the Reeds because of the fact that a very large amount of reed (a type of large aquatic grass) would wash up on its shore.

If you are looking for attractions near Somorrostro Beach, you can drive six minutes to Aquarium Barcelona which contains 35 aquariums that are home to 11,000 animals representing 451 species including sharks, rays, penguins, and other large fish.  Picasso Museum is an eight-minute drive away – it is an art museum that houses an extensive collection of a total of 4,251 artworks by the very famous Spanish painter Pablo Picasso and was opened in 1963, becoming the first museum dedicated to the legendary painter’s work.  Barcelona Zoo is home to many plants and animals including pine oak, white mulberry, robinia, black howler, brown bear, and red kangaroo - you can also watch sea lion feedings here.  If you are looking for another great attraction near Somorrostro Beach, Arco de Triunfo de Barcelona is a historical triumphal arch-shaped monument that was the main gate access for the 1888 Barcelona World Fair and you can click Instagram-worthy pictures here.

Restaurants

There are many restaurants within a five-minute drive of Somorrostro Beach.  The Mediterranean restaurant Xiroi is located behind Somorrostro Beach  and features snacks, rice, meat dishes, desserts, and bread – it also has waterfront terraces with seating and DJs.  L’Escamarla offers prawns, fried calamari, coca bread with vine tomato, and grilled razor clams in an elegant setting with modern decoration and an open kitchen.  Kuk Pizzeria Baris another good restaurant – it is a pizza restaurant that serves pizza, empanadas, pies, rolls, and chicken pockets – and has a nice bar.  If you are looking for more restaurants near Somorrostro Beach, Restaurant Salamanca is a seafood restaurant with a nice menu including fried fish, green salad, grilled barat, desserts, and beer.
